Sample interview questions
How do you ensure that accrued expenses are complete and accurate at month-end?

I begin with recurring expense schedules, purchase orders, vendor invoices, payroll data, and discussions with budget owners to identify services received but not yet invoiced. I document the calculation and assumptions for each accrual, post supported entries, and reverse them appropriately in the following period. I then compare actual invoices to prior accruals and investigate material variances to improve future estimates.

Describe your approach to reconciling a balance sheet account with unexplained differences.

I first establish the expected subledger or supporting-schedule balance and compare it to the general ledger. I isolate differences by period, transaction type, entity, and source system, then trace each item to documentation and journal entries. After correcting the issue, I document the root cause, remediation, and any control or process change needed to prevent recurrence.

What steps would you take when an upstream system repeatedly produces incorrect expense coding?

I would quantify the impact, identify the specific transactions and coding patterns involved, and meet with the process owner to understand the workflow and system rules. I would correct the current-period accounting while proposing a durable fix such as revised mapping, validation controls, clearer purchasing guidance, or an automated exception report. I would also test the change and monitor subsequent periods to confirm it resolves the issue.

How have you supported intercompany accounting and consolidation?

I have used standardized intercompany schedules to align counterparties, transaction dates, currencies, and account mappings across entities. Before consolidation, I reconcile reciprocal balances, investigate timing or classification differences, and ensure elimination entries are supported. I also maintain clear documentation for transfer-pricing entries, foreign-currency considerations, and reviewer sign-off.

How would you use NetSuite and Excel to make the close process more efficient?

I would map manual close tasks and prioritize high-volume, repeatable activities with frequent errors or delays. In NetSuite, I would evaluate saved searches, recurring journal entries, workflows, account reconciliations, and reporting automation; in Excel, I would use structured schedules, Power Query or controlled templates, and variance checks. Any automation would include documented logic, review controls, and testing before it becomes part of the close checklist.

About this role.

Dandy is transforming the massive and antiquated dental industry—an industry worth over $400B. Backed by some of the world’s leading venture capital firms, we’re on an ambitious mission to simplify and modernize every function of the dental practice through technology. As we expand our reach globally, Dandy is building the operating system for dental offices around the world—empowering clinicians and their teams with technology, innovation, and world-class support to achieve more for their practices, their people, and their patients.

About the Role

We’re hiring a Senior Accountant to own core parts of our month-end and year-end close. You’ll report to the Assistant Controller and join a focused team supporting two US manufacturing labs, a set of international entities and rising transaction volume. We are looking for a self-starter with an operational mindset who can navigate complex accounting transactions, and find solutions to new accounting scenarios as they arise.

Dandy runs on physical operations: labs, materials, equipment, shipping and people across several countries. Each of these flows into the general ledger. We want an accountant who understands how operations show up in the books and works with upstream teams to get the data right the first time.

Your main areas: prepaid and accrued expenses, operating expense coding, intercompany and consolidation, general ledger maintenance and close procedures. You’ll partner with Operations, Procurement, People and FP&A to find process gaps and close them.

What you’ll do

  • Own prepaid, accrued expense and opex schedules, including professional fees, software and contractor spend.

  • Prepare and post journal entries for the monthly, quarterly and annual close, with clear support for estimates, allocations and accruals.

  • Book intercompany entries and support consolidation across our US and international entities. Work with Tax on quarterly transfer pricing entries.

  • Reconcile balance sheet accounts and resolve differences before close.

  • Prepare flux analysis and explain monthly results to the Assistant Controller and FP&A.

  • Trace coding errors back to source systems such as payroll, purchasing and billing, and work with system owners to fix them upstream.

  • Document processes, accounting policies and controls to support our annual audit.

  • Prepare audit support schedules and respond to auditor requests.

  • Automate manual close steps in NetSuite and related systems.

What We’re Looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or a related field.

  • 3+ years as a Senior Accountant, or 5+ years of progressive accounting experience.

  • Experience in an operational business: manufacturing, distribution, healthcare services, logistics or multi-site operations.

  • Strong grasp of US GAAP, accruals, reconciliations and internal controls.

  • Advanced Excel skills and comfort with large data sets.

  • A track record of fixing root causes in upstream processes.

  • Clear, concise communication with accountants and non-accountants.

  • Strong organization, attention to detail and follow-through on tight deadlines.

  • Curiosity and a willingness to ask questions.

Bonus points

  • Inventory, cost or manufacturing accounting experience.

  • Multi-entity and multi-currency accounting.

  • NetSuite experience.

  • Public accounting or audit experience.

  • CPA or CPA candidate.

  • Experience with BI tools such as Looker.
