Sample interview questions
I would first use a few diagnostic questions to identify whether the challenge is conceptual, procedural, or vocabulary-based. I would then use visual models such as number lines and fraction bars, connect fractions to familiar examples, and progress in small steps from equivalence to operations. I would finish with short independent practice and use the results to plan the next lesson.
I keep lessons interactive by asking frequent check-for-understanding questions, using digital whiteboards or visual tools, and giving students opportunities to explain their reasoning. I also connect problems to the student’s interests where appropriate and balance direct instruction with guided practice.
My feedback is specific, encouraging, and actionable. I would highlight concepts the student understood, identify one or two priority areas to practice, and suggest concrete next steps so the student and family understand progress and goals.
I would use the relevant grade-level Common Core standards as the instructional framework, then assess the learner’s current mastery and prerequisite gaps. This allows me to preserve grade-level goals while adjusting examples, pacing, and practice activities to meet the student’s needs.
I would acknowledge the student’s frustration, normalize that productive struggle is part of learning, and break the problem into smaller achievable steps. I would offer a simpler related example or a different representation, celebrate progress, and gradually return to the original task once confidence improves.
