Sample interview questions
I would begin with a brief conversation about the student’s goals, recent coursework, and areas they find difficult. I would then use diagnostic questions or a short assessment covering prerequisite skills, review the results with the student, and create targeted lessons that address gaps while supporting current classwork.
I use an interactive whiteboard, ask frequent check-for-understanding questions, and have the student work through examples rather than only watching demonstrations. I also connect concepts to the student’s academic goals and adjust the pacing and problem difficulty based on their responses.
I would break the concept into smaller prerequisite steps, use a concrete example, and model one problem while explaining my reasoning. Then I would guide the student through a similar problem, gradually reduce support, and use a final independent problem to confirm understanding.
I would give specific feedback on what the student understood well, the errors or misconceptions that need attention, and the next steps for practice. I would keep the feedback encouraging, actionable, and tied to clear learning goals so the student knows how to improve.
I would maintain a reliable schedule with dedicated preparation time before each session and document each student’s progress after meetings. Clear scheduling expectations, organized lesson materials, and consistent progress notes allow me to provide continuity even when working evenings and weekends.
