Sample interview questions
How do you turn a complex technical topic into a course for learners with different levels of expertise?

I begin with audience research and define measurable outcomes for each learner group. I then structure content from foundational concepts to realistic tasks, using plain language, worked examples, and optional depth for advanced learners. I validate the design with SMEs and test it with representative learners before scaling it.

Describe how you would work with a subject-matter expert who provides highly technical but unstructured material.

I would first align with the SME on learner goals, prerequisite knowledge, and the required level of technical accuracy. I would organize the source material into a course outline, identify gaps, and convert concepts into learner-friendly explanations, demonstrations, and practice activities. I would use focused review cycles so the SME can validate accuracy without needing to rewrite instructional content.

How do you evaluate whether a course has excessive cognitive load?

I review whether each lesson has a clear objective, removes nonessential information, and introduces new concepts at an appropriate pace. I examine assessment results, completion behavior, learner feedback, and common support questions for signs of confusion. Based on the findings, I may chunk content, add examples, simplify visuals, or introduce guided practice.

What role do AI tools play in your instructional-design workflow?

AI tools can accelerate ideation, research synthesis, outline creation, draft generation, and variations of examples or assessment items. I treat their output as a starting point rather than an authoritative source, verifying technical claims with reliable documentation and SMEs. I also ensure the final learning experience is coherent, appropriate for the audience, and aligned with defined outcomes.

How would you measure the success of a certification or onboarding course for a cloud product?

I would define success metrics before development, including completion rates, assessment performance, time to proficiency, learner satisfaction, and product-adoption indicators where available. For certification, I would also analyze item-level assessment data and pass rates to identify weak learning objectives. I would use these signals with qualitative learner and SME feedback to prioritize improvements in a maintained course backlog.
